Holiday Security
With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us will be leaving our properties unattended, for extended periods, while we enjoy a getaway or the company of relatives and friends.
The biggest concern with leaving our homes vacant is that it can become vulnerable to burglary and theft. There is more that you can do rather than hope and pray that your home will remain untouched. The risk of theft can be dramatically reduced by taking a few precautionary measures.
In the midst of the holiday rush and excitement, these things can be overlooked or forgotten. However, it is worthwhile to incorporate this little bit of extra time and planning to decrease the odds of your home falling victim to burglary and theft. Remember that thieves do not take a break over the holidays!
The most effective way to keep your property safe is to continue to make it appear occupied and lived in.
Thieves primarily target properties that appear vacant. Such giveaways of an unattended home include:
- Uncollected Mail in the letter box;
- Newspapers accumulated on the lawn;
- Overgrown lawn; and
- Absence of lights at night.
If you are on friendly terms with a neighbour or someone in the area, you could ask for their assistance in keeping an eye on your home. You could also ask if they wouldn’t mind collecting your mail and newspapers. If this is not an option, contact Australia Post regarding holding your mail from being delivered for a period of time.
Overgrown grass can be solved by appointing a home maintenance professional to trim your lawn while you are away. Book this date in advance to have them attend your lawn during your absence. This will keep your property appearing well looked after.
Consider using sensor or timed lights, which will automatically turn on an off during your holiday. This is very cheap and effective!
Insurance
For peace of mind, it’s wise to cover your home and contents with insurance. Ensure that your home and contents insurance policy is continually updated with your most recent purchases.Last Minute Checks
Before heading away, carefully check that all windows and doors are securely locked. Keep any valuables of out sight of nearby windows. Don’t forget to think about items that may be of value in your shed. It may be worthwhile storing some assets within your home during your absence. Anything that is of significant value would best be left with friends or family.
Enjoy your holiday!
